portmap problem

On my RH4.2 system, when root does "showmount -e localhost" I get...
mount clntudp_create: RPC: Program not registered

I am trying to share NFS and can't get it to work. I've tried
the portmap-4.0-3.i386.rpm and I've tried compiling portmap_4.tar.gz
without the CHECK_PORT option because of the /usr/doc/portmap/README
that said,

"(4) If you get error messages of the form: "not registered: xxxx",
disable the CHECK_PORT feature in the Makefile, remove pmap_check.o and
rebuild the portmap program. Then proceed with step 3."

And still I can't get it to work. Perhaps I'm just doing something silly.
(Though I am currently able to mount NFS directories when my RH5 system
is the server.)

Any thoughts?
