Illegal value in LDAP attribute. (#5.3.5)

using "deliveryProgramPath: /usr/local/bin/maildrop -d $USER" I get an
error "Illegal value in LDAP attribute. (#5.3.5)" in the bounce.

I tried escaping it with  \$USER  as suggested by one document. any
idea?
