I use and like the bayes rules in spamassassin. I think they are very effective. You can set up SA to show you a report of the "hits" it gets on each email classified as SPAM. I've done this, and I see that the Bayes rules do indeed work well.

I've never run spamassassin without the Bayes rules, so I don' t know what the processor hit is like.

I've had very good experience with bayes in SA. It has not affected the performance of our mailserver notably and it really helps getting the spam from the ham.
