The 760 should also have a program called PS.EXE.
Run that to see the status of the COM port.  I've
found that I also have to enable COM1 through that
program.

Although it should go without saying, also check
the StartUp folder and/or the RUN= & LOAD= lines
in WIN.INI to see if there's an app being loaded
automagically that's holding on to COM1.
