[RCSE] Original Mark Smith Mini-B.O.T.
Greetings,
Back on my feet after a long hospital stay and being unable to do a whole
lot for WAY too long. Was limited to lifting < 10lbs. for ~3 months, so
wasn't able to do any building or flying to speak of either ( couldn't even
find a D.S. anonymous meeting ). But now I've got plenty of ideas and
plans. Decided to dig out an old 2-meter bird of time kit that's been laying
around. It has an 11% or 8% wing option, I went with the 8%. I've several
questions for anyone who's put one of these together. How does it handle on
approach, are spoilers something I should consider? It's an old design/kit,
does it have any inherent structural weaknesses that can be fixed using
today's materials/techniques? I like the full flying stab, but it is
actuated via a long horn that hangs way down (drag) on one side of the fuse.
Anybody have any ideas on how to internalize it? I read somewhere that
Monocoat is optimal for open bay structures, as it is stiffer than others,
and will impart alot more rigidity to the wing. Is Micafilm comparable? I'm
not a big fan of the latter. Also, I'm thinking this plane will turn out
much lighter than advertised due to todays smaller gear. My concern here is,
will reducing the wingloading affect its ability to penetrate, so much as to
outweigh the posivitive effects of a lighter airplane? Any other hints and
tips would be most appreciated. Looking forward to flying this little gem.
(or anything else for that matter:-)
TIA,
Ken Johnson
