[RCSE] Wanted: philanthropist Manufacturer/dist/customer service...
I know that there are many levels of involvement in the soaring community.
It never ceases to amaze me the people who bitch about the cost of top
quality equipment. Then you have the guy who says a $30 servo won't hold
center, the gears strip, not enough torque but, he has 6 of them in his
molded ship...What kind of jackass does this? If finances are a problem
then decide what level you can afford and if that won't do then find another
hobby. But please stop bitching about price. No one is getting rich in the
soaring industry. Watch the industry continue to evolve in a few years the
molded ships will cost even more as the European economies get more stable
and that expensive CNC equipment gets used for more profitable ventures.
Sure there will be guys who will donate their sweat equity to their passion.
And, for a time we who like their creations can flatter them into sharing
with us at a price. Pay the tab gentlemen and be happy that someone is
either devoted or stupid enough to deal with you. Don't misunderstand me I
think it is great that someone can put a bird in the air for a couple of
hundred dollars. Can you sustain the hobby with that investment? NO! To
grow and evolve in soaring the money must flow. It is also a disservice to
delude newcomers with unrealistic price expectations for marginal beginner
equipment. Hell I shudder to think of the time, money, travel expenses
etc... that John Roe has experienced. He was new to the hobby in recent
years and he is arguably competing on an international level now. He is a
rare example. 99% will never take it as far as John. But a good radio and
better planes will not hold you back. It is your time, decide how best to
use it.
