Re: Re(2): Re: [RCSE] Re: altimeter that records max alt.
Jim--
Hmmm, one of my "can we do this?" thought exercises is to instrument a sailplane and measure & record altitudes, temperatures, launch stresses, etc.
This TI hardware you describe sounds like a good basis for that instrumentation package.
Thanks!

Guys:
If you want to collect the data, you can purchase a Ti83+ graphing
calculator, Staples, etc $80 and a CBL data logger unit from Texas
Instruments (ti.com) and a barometer sensor from Vernier Software
(verniew.com) Strip the case off of the CBL and place this and barometer
sensor in the fuse or in a wing panel. After flying, download the data
from the CBL to the graphing calculator and you have a entire flight as a
readout on the graphing calcultor's screen. My students (jim gray did a
writeup in RCSD at that time) did this about 8 years ago and they also
adapted a Davis Engineering wind speed indicator to the CBL and we were
able to collect lots of data on different airfoils in real situations, not
in a wind tunnel. Total cost is about $300, but you can use the Ti83+ for
calculating your scores. A temp sensor also comes with the CBL unit and
this is good for collecting an afternoon's worth of data on the thermal
cycles in real time.

PS: This data also can be downloaded to a PC or Mac for future reference.
Voltage probes also come with the CBL and you can get more accurate
amp/volt sensor (separate sensor) for checking your electronic stuff and
saving it. They have a force sensor that I am working with, to use as a
dyno. Thrust and torque in newtons, in real time for electrics. Some of
these items are for use by academics and you may have to talk real nice to
get them, if you are not in education.
