Re: [RCSE] Servo extensions
Matthew,
I bought 3-lead twisted wire, connectors (pins and shells), and a crimping
tool from FMA to make up servo extensions or modify lead lengths. This has
worked out very well as I can make all of the leads exactly the length I
want. I haven't compared prices with other vendors. FMA has ads in the
model magazines and has a web site. http://www.fmadirect.com/
Cermark or Custom Electronics both sell the connector shells, pins,
sockets, crimp tools, and even wire. They usually have an ad in RCM and
such mags.
Another good source for R/C connectors is Dymond Modelwerks in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. http://www.rc.dymond.com Their prices are quite a bit lower than
Cermark or Custom for the connectors.
The crimp tool can be found at Radio Shack for fewer $$. The crimping tool
costs about $10.00 at many electronic supply stores.
I also found red, black and white multistrand wire in an electronic supply
store that was the right size for use in servo connectors. (And a lot
cheaper than similar wire from hobby suppliers). Following a suggestion on
RCSE, I took about 8-foot lengths of each of the three colors, tied a knot
in one end the put the other ends in a drill and wound a twist in the
wires. With a heat gun, I heated the plastic jackets to set the twist.
This yields twisted servo leads that are much less susceptible to stray
pickup and jitter as compared to conventional untwisted leads. Or, you can
buy twisted wire in two different gauges from FMA.
Regards,
Dick
