For those of us who started flying RC back in the 50's, we quickly learned
the necessary soldering skills.  Everything we had was built from a bag of
resistors, condensers, wire, perf board, and tubes.  I find soldering much
easier than using cheap crimping tools.  I bought a crimping tool from
Custom Electronics but quickly gave up because of the difficulty in getting
a good crimp.

Nothing beats a good solder joint on critical applications.  I spent over
32 years conducting wind tunnel tests and we almost never used plugs inside
the high vibration environment of the test cell.  Everything was always
soldered.  About the only time we used plugs was for auxiliary balances and
other instrumentation that had to be frequently moved, removed, or
reinstalled.
