not really helpful for your original problem, but maybe another way:

have a look at MailBoxer

http://www.zope.org/Members/mjablonski/MailBoxer

MailBoxer has a script called smtp2zope.py which transfers mails from 
your MTA to Zope via a simple URL/Post-Request... very easy to configure 
and use.
